Court Competency Curriculum
The Court Competency Curriculum (CCC) helps youth understand the court process — building the skills needed to participate meaningfully in their case through supportive, evidence-based education.
The Court Competency Curriculum (CCC) is an educational program designed for youth involved in the juvenile justice system who need additional support to understand legal processes and participate effectively in their case.
Through a structured, evidence-based curriculum, youth learn about the court system and develop practical skills to communicate with their attorney and better understand what is happening throughout the legal process.
The program includes ten learning modules that focus on key topics such as:
-
Understanding the roles of people in the courtroom
-
Learning what happens during court proceedings
-
Building communication skills with an attorney
-
Developing the ability to think through situations in a rational and factual way
Services are provided in the home or through telehealth, depending on the needs of the youth and family.
Who the Program Serves
CCC serves youth who are involved with the juvenile justice system and have been evaluated by the court as not currently competent, but likely to become competent with education and support.
Participation in the program occurs when ordered by the court following a competency evaluation.
What Youth and Families Can Expect
Youth participate in individualized learning sessions with trained staff, typically one to two times per week, in a supportive and developmentally appropriate environment.
Families play an important role in supporting youth by:
-
Ensuring youth attend scheduled sessions
-
Encouraging engagement in the learning process
-
Supporting connections to recommended services when appropriate
Staff provide progress updates to Juvenile Probation at key points during the program. While staff focus on education and skill-building, decisions about legal competency remain the responsibility of the court.
Juvenile Probation involvement is required.
There is no cost to youth or families for participation in the program.
